Dreamtime:
6 ½ minutes
Dreamtime
is, literally, dream-inspired video. Fragments of a sleeping five-year old's
dream narratives, recorded over a three month period and condensed into
6 ½ minutes, are juxtaposed with peaceful images of her sleeping.
The lively and sometimes violent narrative of the dreams contrasts with
quiet images of her sleeping, suggesting the duality of consciousness and
sleep. She experiences what is referred to as a lucid dream, which is characterized
by the dreamer knowing that he/she is dreaming while experiencing the dream:
"I was trying to get back to life, but I just couldn't... I was trying
to make all the fake people in my dream fake, but it didn't work... trying
to get back to life, but I just couldn't." |

"Perhaps
more than any of my other single channel works, Dreamtime elicits strong
reactions, both positive and negative, in audiences. Following a PBS broadcast,
one angry viewer concluded that the sleeping girl's narratives were declarations
of abuse and threatened to call child protective services. The piece investigates
the intangible, private, sometimes disturbing world of the unconscious that
underlies the deceptively serene." |
